Northeast Maine is one of the first places in the US to see the sun rise.
Cadillac Mountain in Acadia is touted as the first
And despite our attempt to get the sunrise ticket,
We were only able to score 6am.
It’s often foggy and cloudy here in Bar Harbor
In the morning
So we decided we couldn’t miss our opportunity to see the sun rise—
Even if we had to be a 1500 feet lower on the beach.
Only the Bigs braved 4:30 am
And it was worth the effort
The sunrise was 5:08.
And by 5:15, this is what we could see—
A bank of clouds at the horizon
seemed determined to keep the sun hidden
A bit disappointed,
We started our trek back to the car…
Only to look back and see this:
Hurray for sunrises!
A bit of patience pays off
We headed back to the house
To rouse the Littles
And head up to meet the morning
On Cadillac Mountain
What a morning!
The Porcupine Islands were beautiful
In the rainbow light of dawn
Our first summit of the day!
On to summit #2–
Beehive
Second only to Precipice in it’s difficulty,
Mom was a little nervous to take us up.
It’s known for it’s iron rungs, ladders,
And narrow ledges.
And it’s views!
See the little sandy area in the middle?
That is Sand Beach, where we swam yesterday
The trail was really fun—
Definitely a bit strenuous
But scrambling up the rungs and ladders was awesome
And the ledges were exhilarating!
It was less than a mile to the top
And worth every step
The Beehive, at 581 feet-
Our second summit of the day
From there we headed down Gorham trail to The Bowl
And then back up 522 feet
to the top of Gorham Mountain
Summit #3
It had amazing views of the ocean
We hiked back down and caught the bus
Over to Jordan Pond.
We heard about their amazing popovers,
A Maine pastry staple.
But it was PACKED today
And there were no popovers to be had.
So we made due with a picnic lunch on the lawn
And set out on second hike of the day—
Jordan Path Pond and The Bubbles.
The Bubbles are the “hills” in the background…
We’ll get to those in a bit
In the meantime,
The pond had some lovely views
But we were really here for the scramble
And the South Bubble didn’t disappoint
761 feet and a great view of Jordan Pond
Summit #4
The plan had been to hike back down,
Finish the Jordan Pond loop…
But we were awfully close to the North Bubble…
So up we went to 873 feet
And summit #5
With over 3 miles under our belts
(And nearly 11 miles for the day)
We headed down to the Bubbles parking lot to catch our bus…
And discovered the Bubbles lot
And the Bubbles Pond lot were NOT the same thing.
And were about a mile apart.
And the last bus would be there in about 25 minutes.
We HOOFED it!
And made it.
We’ll sleep good tonight.
