We travelled all day yesterday—
An early morning flight, a longish layover,
Another flight, and then a scenic drive.
And we made it, safe and sound,
To our VRBO in Bar Harbor.
The house was a bit older and a bit quainter than we expected,
But we settled in, had some dinner,
And chickened out on ice cream in town.
We’d planned to walk to a local shop
But setting out in the dark seemed a bit daunting
When we had no idea where to go.
So we watched a few episodes of Bob’s Burgers
Which became the tradition of the trip
(Every night, before bed, at least an episode or two)
And hit the sack a bit early
(We had been up since 3:30am)
Which meant we were ready to play in the morning!
We came all this way to spend a week
Exploring the legendary Acadia National Park.
Today we maneuvered the Island Explorer bus
(Bar Harbor is on Mount Desert Island)
And landed at Otter Cliffs on the Ocean Path
Otter Point was beautiful
We hiked down to Otter Point
And took in the sights
When the clouds cleared,
The whole place sparkled
We found this beach with huge, round rocks
Like you’d see in a Colorado river
It was weirdly in the middle of all the cliffs
We made it to Thunder Hole
(Although we missed high tide—
A bit noisy but we’ll have to come back
With better timing)
The highlight was what we dubbed
Table Rock.
It took some scrambling,
Be we thought it was the perfect place to have lunch
Family picture on Table Rock
After lunch,
We thought it was time to really get close to the Atlantic
So we wandered to Sand Beach (what an original name)
At the end of Ocean Path
Dipped our toes
Because it was SO COLD,
Toes was about all we could take
There was a lot of digging
And chilling on the beach
And watching the gorgeous shoreline
And intermittently we braved the ocean
It was brisk to say the least.
We could only go in up to our waists
And then had to run out on numb legs
It was really fun
Once we had all the “swimming” we could stand,
We headed into town.
We significantly underestimated the number of shops in town.
We wandered for hours,
Looking for just the right souvenir.
We had dinner at Side Street Cafe,
Enjoying our lobster
(In rolls, on mac and cheese), blueberry beer and soda,
and live music on the outdoor patio.
It was perfection.
But then,
It got better.
We tried our first ice cream parlor of the trip—
Mount Desert Ice Cream.
They had flights of ice cream
So we tried their chocolate, s’mores, cookies and cream
And even basil ice cream amongst others.
The fave?
Salted caramel.
It’s going to be hard to beat.
This DAY is going to be hard to beat!
